May 31, 2002 - Cape May to Atlantic City
We left at 7:15 for Atlantic City along with Mo Martini and Serendipity for the 41-mile trip via the Atlantic Ocean. It was very shallow getting out of the harbor and into the Ocean. We watched many dolphins feeding along the way. We reached the Ocean at 7:45 and it looks pretty calm right now - hope it stays that way. Well, of course, the calmness didn't last and we found ourselves enduring large swells, which made the trip very rolly. Thank heavens the trip wasn't very long. We arrived about 11:00 am wondering what this city would be like. We stayed at the Frank Farley State Marina right next to the Trump Marina Casino. We were now in the very high rent district - We couldn't believe the price per foot - $3.00 per foot for May and then $3.50 a foot after that. I thought they used to give people a break on their lodging, hoping they would gamble a lot. Well, no such luck here. We didn't hear many flattering things said about Donald Trump from the people in the know here. When we arrived in Atlantic City we smelled something hot smelling in the salon and after exploring in the engine room, Bill found out that there was a hole in the exhaust pipe. While Bill tried to figure out what to do about the problem and waited for a repair man to come, Catherine and I went out to see what there was to do and see. We found a lot of people gambling and a beauty shop in the hotel, and I decided to get my hair cut and colored, while Catherine worked out in the gym for a bit. Bill didn't have any luck with the boat problem and the repairman was no help, so he diagnosed the problem and we took the Jitney Bus to town so that he could find a hardware store to get supplies for the needed repair. Catherine and I walked around the Boardwalk area and found it to be not much of anything of interest. Bill was successful in finding what he needed, and we took the Jitney back to the boat so that Bill could fix it. That took all evening. The marina told us that we couldn't stay another day, as they had 80 "Go Fast" boats coming in for a poker run on Saturday. However, on Saturday, they did say that we could stay, so we rented a car from a local car rental called Just Four Wheels. They picked us up in their van and took us to their lot. What a riot. This was a very popular spot and it was very busy with local traffic, but we got a car very reasonably and we drove about 40 miles back to explore Cape May. We had a delightful day and thoroughly enjoyed that very delightful town. The entire town has been declared a National Historical District. There are more historic homes there than any other city in the country. We took a tour on a trolley and found it very interesting and fun to see all the Victorian homes and Bed and Breakfasts. Cape May is worth the trip if any of you are ever in the area. Very quaint and the beaches are lovely too.
