April 16, 2002 - Mayport to St. Simons Island to visit the Duncans
We left about 8:00 am for Brunswick and the Golden Isle Marina, which is near St. Simons Island and Sea Island, 65 miles away. We decided to go out in the Atlantic Ocean, via the St. Johns River, as we thought we could make better time than on the ICW. It was pretty, but we found large swells and it was very rolly. We passed a large Navy vessel going out and many large odd shaped container ships headed somewhere. There were tons of shrimp boats and the dolphins were everywhere too. The average depth of the water is about 40 feet today, and we are enjoyed not being threatened by "skinny water". It almost looks like Lake Michigan, but we would be in about 100 feet of water that far out. We arrived at the Marina about 2:30 and washed boat, got ourselves cleaned up and called Mary Lou and Charlie. Charlie was playing golf and came to pick us up about 5:00. It was so good to see them, and see their winter home. We took our cocktails over to the beach a block away and enjoyed the view of the Atlantic, and later Mary Lou fixed a delicious steak dinner - Charlie grilled the fillets.
