October 30, 2001 - Cuba to anchorage at Swallow Bluff Island
Last night we had dinner at the Log Cabin after borrowing the courtesy car to get groceries. Next time I'll let Ralph go alone, as he's the pro. He wouldn't even let me see my own list, and he went through the store like a white tornado. After dinner, we played bridge. I got up at 6:00, as the sun was up so early and was so bright. Several boats left early but it was foggy, so they had to stop on the river and wait. By the time the "sleepy heads" aboard the Rendezvous got up, it was clear. We left Cuba Landing at 9:00 and the water was like a glass mirror - how pretty. Fishermen were all over the place, as we headed towards our anchorage 40 miles away at Beach Creek Island. They just don't get the kind of fall color in the trees that we get at home. We are trying to decide what to fix for dinner tonight - steak, shrimp, chix, pork chops or what. Big decision for the day. Catherine just told me that I'm all out of minutes on my cell phone for this month. Boo! Hoo! Bill is cleaning the windows, and this feels much more like the "Cruising Down The River" melody that we can imagine. It is so peaceful! One note - yesterday, the highlight of Bill's day was coming down into the salon and finding Jo and Wendy WATCHING the exercise video, and wishing the pounds would melt away. Truly, I had just completed my 2 miles, and Jo had just returned from a walk with Ralph.
There are many mussel hunters walking along the sunny shores today. They carry some sort of stick to get them with. As it was too early to stop at Beach Island we decided to proceed on to mile marker 170 and Swallow Bluff Island. Beach Island looked beautiful and serene, but there seems to be a lot of nice spots - hope Swallow Bluff is one of the, because after that the river looks like it gets more narrow and curves around and doesn't have all these island coves to go into.
We arrived at Swallow Bluff at 2:15 - what lovely spot! It's warm and quiet. It took us a couple of tries to get the anchor to hold, as it is pretty deep - about 16-18 feet. Good job, Cap.
After Bill turned the engines off, we took a deep breath and enjoyed the quiet. Jo and I did the exercise routine, showered and fixed dinner. Shrimp, coleslaw and zuchinni was the menu. By cocktail hour the sun was setting and the FULL moon was in view. The sky was red and beautiful. It was cold, so we bundled up,lit our pumpkin candle and sat on the deck for awhile to look at the moon and enjoy the peaceful night. Bill had some heat on below so we didn't stay out very long. Dinner and bridge followed.
PS. It was sad to hear that we might expect more terrorist attacks later this week. Sure hope that they are wrong about that.
