May 11, 2002 - Southport to Sneads Ferry, North Carolina
We got up early to travel to Sneads Ferry and Swan's Point Marina, but we didn't leave until 8:30 as the word around the marina was that we would have storms and lightning - 70% chance. This was concerning, but after reviewing the weather forecast; it looked like the storm would be south of us, and so we ventured out. Several boaters decided to stay in South Port for the day in case it was bad. We weren't too worried as we would be on the ICW and could duck in somewhere if it got bad. When we left we had to go through a section that had many channels coming and going where there were markers all over the place and they were kind of difficult to sort out. This always frustrates me, but Bill always seems to have a good handle on it. After we sorted it out, we were in deep water in the Cape Fear River, until we entered the ICW again, where it was much shallower. Even though it was cloudy with rain threatening, there were a ton of boats out. Of course, it was a Saturday and all the waterways are busier then. We had a 65-mile day, with a couple of bridges to wait for, which always makes for delays. We arrived about 3:00 in the afternoon, and washed the boat down and did a couple loads of laundry. There wasn't a town to go and explore, so we had a pork tenderloin dinner at home and played with James, and watched a movie. I'm writing during the intermissions, as I've vowed not to get so far behind again. On to Beaufort tomorrow on Mother's Day. Stayed tuned, as we will be headed toward the Chesapeake Bay soon.
