April 24, 2002 - Savannah to Hilton Head on the ICW
We arrived here yesterday afternoon. It was a beautiful, sunny, warm day as we traveled along the ICW. There were a lot of dolphins feeding and playing along side of us and they are so fun to watch. It wasn't particularly pretty as we were in a marshy wetland area until we got here. And of course it is very green and beautiful here. We were greeted by a darling dock gal who handled the lines for us, hooked up electric and water, cable T.V. AND our own private land phone line. We couldn't believe the service, but what would you expect in Harbour Town??? AND a nice bottle of wine too boot! It didn't take us long to settle in with all that help, so we cleaned up and walked up to the shops, which are right along the dock. That didn't take very long, so we had a rumrunner at an outdoor café and came back to the boat to grill some chicken for dinner. Jo Lundgren called to alert us that PBS was having a special show all about the Hudson River, and as long as we will be traveling on it a little later, we found it and it was interesting. Thanks Jo, for keeping us informed. Today we took a trolley to a LITTLE shopping center in Sea Pines and then came back here to do some projects on the boat and relax a bit. Tonight we are having a little dinner on the boat, and Bill is fooling with the depth sounder. Oh yes, yesterday we had a few minutes of excitement as we were going along staying in the middle of the markers when, we were in VERY shallow water and almost ran aground. My heart started pounding hard as that always makes me nervous. Luckily we weren't going very fast and Bill had a cool head in time to stop and maneuver off the bottom. Never a dull moment in boating, I guess. A fellow boater who was following us stayed close for a while to make sure we hadn't done any damage, which was very nice of him. There are lots of memories here from years past when we came here with friends and family, and to see the Family Circle Tennis Tournament - lots of you remember, I'm sure.
Tomorrow we plan to go to Beaufort for a few days, as we have heard a lot about the quaint town
