October 22, 2001 - From Big E to Golconda ,Illinois
We left the Big E Marina at 12:10 p.m., after ordering the generator parts that will be in Paducah on Thursday. We're going to Golconda Marina in Illinois and return to Paducah Thursday to get the part and meet Jo and Ralph at the Big E on Friday. Can't wait 'til they get here. It's hazy and about 70 degrees today. We tried all weekend to get our "stuff" on the computer, but the cell phone modem just wouldn't allow it. If we don't write, you can suspect that is the case. We'll get it out as soon as possible. The Ohio River is very wide around here and looks much like the Mississippi. We went through the Smithland Lock, which was no problem as there wasn't any wind. Boy, there sure are a lot of huge logs and junk to watch out for. It's getting real gray. It'll probably rain before we get to Golconda. Bill just had to cut our speed way down to avoid hitting some real bad looking stuff. We arrived at Golconda at 3:45 and were tied up by 4:00. We'll stay here until Thursday when we back track back to Paducah. They only charge $23.40 a day here, so that is pretty good. They charged $20.000 at the Big E. This part of the country hasn't caught up with the Michigan prices -don't think we'll tell them. They have a courtesy car here, so we'll take it to town and do laundry tomorrow. We walked to town tonight - not much here. Everything was closed or deserted, but we found a real red neck bar, The Creek, and had dinner. The only vehicles in the parking lot were pick-um-up trucks. While walking back to the boat in the dark, 7 deer ran across the road in front of us.
