March 31, 2002 - Islamorada to Key Largo on Easter Sunday on the ICW
We left about 10:30 in the morning for Key Largo about 25 miles away. We stayed on the ICW and followed the markers, which took us in and around the mangrove. In some spots it was very narrow, and then we would find ourselves in a big bay. The water was very shallow, so we didn't go very fast. It was Easter Sunday and a million boats were out and about - big, small, fast and slow. Boats everywhere. No wonder, with this beautiful sunny, warm weather. It will probably feel real funny next winter when we are in snowy, cold Colorado, but at least we will be able to see more of the kids and the grandkids.
We arrived at the Gilberts Paradise Marina early afternoon, but we had to wait for about a half and hour while they cleared 4 or 5 GO FAST boats from the gas dock. They had come in for lunch at the Tiki Bar and they didn't have any room for us until they left. This is a very interesting place. There are lots of characters, and a lot of half dressed women wearing very little. Skinny tops and thongs abound. After we docked we walked around and decided to do laundry. A blues band started around 3:00 and we were right in the heart of the action. Lots of people watching, and talking to the people walking the docks - all kinds of people..
Tomorrow we will travel to the South Beach area of Miami where Allison my niece, John and Sandi's daughter, will join us and show us around.
