May 12, 2002 - Mothers Day, Sneads Ferry to Beaufort, North Carolina
Our trip from Sneads Ferry to Beaufort was pretty uneventful except that around noon boats from everywhere came out of the woodwork and made the ICW very busy. We really had to be on our toes watching for passing boats and markers. The Beaufort harbor had lots of sailboats anchored all over. There was a strong wind, which made docking a little tough, but we were finally tied up safe and sound. The marina was right in town, so we walked around to see what was "happening", and had dinner at a little bar outside right at the marina. The next day we spent touring Beaufort. We took a walking tour of the old historical homes in town. Some of them had been moved from other locations around the city. They were kept in their original state for the most part, and contained wonderful antiques and treasures from their time. One was the apothecary and doctors office and had many antique instruments and medicinal bottles etc. Then we boarded a double-decker bus (from London) to see the rest of the town and hear more about its history as a seaport and the 3rd oldest town in North Carolina. After the tour, James napped and Bill diddled around the boat, while Amy and I took the decrypted, but useful courtesy car and did some grocery shopping. The shops were going to close at 5:00, so at 4:00 we finally got it together and walked back to town to check them out. They were real nice, but we didn't buy anything, and we went back to the boat to have dinner and make plans for our trip to Belhaven in the morning.
