August 1, 2002 - Gore Bay back to U.S.A at Detour, Michigan
We left Gore Bay at 8:15 and soon heard reports of a severe storm coming our way. It wasn't on the news that we heard before we left. It started to look a little stormy, so we decided to try to get into Meldrum Bay before the storm hit - it was the only option. By 11:00 we were almost there and it was looking pretty grim. We barely made it in before it started to really blow and rained. We were glad to be in and tied up, so we could watch boats coming in all afternoon that were running from the storm. This looks like that kind of storm that could last days. Hope not. By night we looked up and the sky looked like something that could turn into a tornado and everyone put out extra lines for security and we waited. The local baker had just arrived with the bake goods that they bring down each evening to sell. Luckily we were able to get our blueberry muffins and a bumbleberry pie before the storm gets really going. They sell the goodies right from the back of their station wagon. Very good. When the storm the electricity went out and was still out in the morning when we left. We were lucky that we could run our generator, so that we could cook dinner and run our video. In the morning we watched boats go out to leave and some came back as it was still too rough. We hung out for a couple of hours to see what the winds might do and about 11:00 we pulled out and headed for Detour Village in Michigan. We had a pretty uneventful trip and arrived about 5:00. It does seem good to be back in the good ole U.S.A. After a while a boat came in and Bill helped them dock and we realized that we had met them at the Peterbourgh Lock and they are from Texas. Their boat is Ranger and they are doing the Loop also. Then we met a couple next to them, also doing the Loop from Cincinnati. After a visit, we all decided to go up to town for dinner together, which was fun. Debbie and Dave are from Texas and Cynthia and Tony are from Cincinnati.
